DSA-JC Application Process

Welcome to the application page for the 2022 DSA-JC exercise, for admission in year 2023.

If you are applying to Victoria Junior College through DSA-JC, please:

  1. complete and submit the online DSA application form, with supporting documents as pdf or photo attachments
  2. take note of the key information for your chosen talent area, such as selection process, criteria and dates.

The supporting documents for your application include:

  • CCA records – all available records in Secondary school
  • Exam result slips – Sec 3 (Year-end), Sec 4 (CA1, SA1)
  • Other supporting documents – such as awards or the highest certification of achievements (if any)
  • For students applying for our Niche Academic Programmes (Drama Elective Programme (DEP), Humanities Programme, Infocomm Technology (Computing), Science Research), please submit the documents stipulated for the talent area, in addition to the above supporting documents

You should get these documents and a digital passport-sized photograph of yourself ready before you start the online application.

Successful applicants may be asked to show proof of originals of the above records during the offer phase.

Applications should reach us by 3 July 2022. Incomplete applications (such as those with incomplete information or without a complete set of supporting documents) may not be considered.

Please note the following:

Successful DSA-JC candidates will not be allowed to participate in the Joint Admissions Exercise. They will also not be allowed to transfer to another school after the release of the GCE O-Level examination results. They are expected to honour their commitment to the DSA-JC schools and to participate in activities related to the talent selected in, for the duration of the programme admitted to. Students who do not fulfil their DSA commitment without valid reason may be required to transfer out to another school.

Performing Arts

Selection will be based on a basket of criteria for the respective talent area.

Auditions will take place in Victoria Junior College. Note the dates and times for auditions. The teacher in-charge will contact applicants to confirm the date and time allocated.

Chinese Orchestra

Format : All applicants are required to play one fast and one slow phrase of at least 16 bars each. Applicants will also be given a sight-reading exercise. Applicants will undergo an interview after the audition.

  1. Applicants should display a high level of musicality.
  2. Applicants should pass the interview
  3. Applicants should possess the ability to cope with the academic rigour of the JC curriculum.
  4. Priority will be given to players from the wind and plucked strings sections, as these are our areas of need. We are not offering DSA places for Guzheng.

Choir

Format : All applicants are required to undergo an audition (vocal testing exercise) conducted by the choir master, as well as an interview. No song preparation is required.

  3. Applicants should possess the ability to cope with the academic rigour of the JC curriculum.
  4. Priority will be given to singers from the tenor and bass sections as these are our areas of need.

Concert Band

Format : All applicants are required to play two contrasting pieces of their choice, and to prepare all major scales. Percussionists should prepare one piece on mallets and another piece on drums or drumset. Applicants will also undergo an interview.

  1. Applicants should display a high level of musicality.
  2. Applicants should pass the interview.
  3. Applicants should have experience in competitions and/or public performances.
  4. Applicants should possess the ability to cope with the academic rigour of the JC curriculum.
  5. Priority will be given to players from the brass and percussion sections, as these are our areas of need. We are not looking for pianists.

Contemporary Dance

Format :  There will be 3 rounds to the auditions. Shortlisted candidates who clear each round will complete all 3 rounds within the allocated slot.

Round 1
All applicants will be required to prepare a solo dance piece to a song of their choice, of not more than 1 minute.

Please note that candidates must apply based on only one of the following dance genres:
1) Contemporary
2) Standard Ballroom
3) Latin Ballroom
4) Street Dance (only Hip Hop, Break Dancing, Popping, Locking)

All other dance genres namely, Ethnic dance (Chinese, Malay, Indian dance), fusion dance forms or other forms of street dance will not be eligible for consideration.

Round 2
Applicants who pass Round 1 will proceed to Round 2.
All shortlisted applicants will be invited to learn a contemporary choreography from our instructor, after which applicants will perform the piece taught to them.

Round 3
Applicants who pass Round 2 will proceed to Round 3.
All shortlisted applicants will undergo an interview with the selection panel.

Attire :
All applicants should audition in the dance gear and footwear suitable for their respective dance genres. The entire audition will be conducted with masks on.

Selection Criteria :

  1. Applicants should display high levels of musicality, performance quality and technical mastery in both their respective areas of dance expertise (round 1), as well as showcasing the choreographer’s piece (round 2).
  2. Applicants should display a high level of versatility, preferably excelling in more than one genre of dance.
  3. Applicants should possess the ability to cope with the academic rigour of the JC curriculum.

Niche Academic Programmes

Applicants for the respective Talent Area must submit their application (including Personal Statement and supporting documents) by 20 June 2022.

VJC is hosting Tea Sessions in May for students interested in our Niche Academic Programmes. Please register for the Tea Sessions at least 3 days before the date of the session. More details can be found in the respective Talent Area segment.

Drama Elective Programme (DEP)

Selection process

  1. Applicant must submit a personal statement (maximum 500 words) detailing why he/she wants to join DEP and his/her involvement in drama related activities. Applicant should submit supporting documents where applicable. These supporting documents may include:
    - your curriculum vitae
    - portfolio of sketches, drawings, photos showcasing design process/ideas
    - certificates of drama accreditation or evidence of participation in drama-related activities
    - links to videos of past performances
  2. Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend an audition where they:
    1. perform a short scene live (6-7mins in length) provided by the school on the day of audition,
    2. answer accompanying short response questions to the scene
    3. will be interviewed

Selection Criteria
(1)     Demonstration of passion in theatre
(2)     Demonstration of clear potential in acting and/or design
(3)    Possesses the requisite traits of a DEP student – confident, well-spoken, adaptable and takes direction well
(4)     Ability to cope with the rigour of the A-Level curriculum

Expectations of students selected into the programme
Students admitted through DSA for Drama Elective Programme (DEP) must
(i)    offer H2 Theatre Studies and Drama (this is an examinable A-Level subject);
(ii)   *participate in English Drama Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation (SYF AP) and
(iii)  be involved in TSD workshops and outreach events

* The student is not expected to join the English Drama Club as their CCA, but is required to participate in the development, rehearsals, and presentation of the SYF AP Drama performance.

Humanities Programme Selection Process

  1. Applicant must submit the following:
    A. Application essay on an issue you feel strongly about (about 500 words)
    B. Portfolio with writing samples* showcasing ability in:

    1. Humanities (eg. English Literature, History, Geography, Art, Drama) – maximum of 3 samples
    2. English Language – maximum of 3 samples
      *Samples chosen may be work done for school or external competitions/publications.

      Applicants may also submit other supporting documents.

  2. Shortlisted applicants will attend an interview, which includes an oral response to a visual text

Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstration of strong interest and aptitude in the Humanities
  2. Evidence of participation and/or achievements in Humanities-related programmes, competitions and/or events (e.g. school-based Humanities talent development programmes)
  3. Ability to cope with the rigour of the A-Level curriculum

Expectations of students selected into the programme
Students admitted to VJC via the DSA (Humanities Programme) must
(i)      enrol in the Arts course;
(ii)     offer H2 Literature in English at the GCE A-Level examinations and
(iii)    be actively involved in the Humanities Programme in VJC

Infocomm Technology (Computing) Selection process

  1. Applicant must submit a personal statement (maximum 500 words) detailing his/her involvement in Computing related activities with relevant supporting documents. Supporting documents may include:
    - certificates from learning programmes such as workshops and bootcamps
    - certificates from competitions such as National Olympiad for Informatics and hackathons
    - certifications/evidence of courses & work attachments
    - examples of computing related projects
  2. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview and are required to undergo a Computing Aptitude Test which will assess the candidates’ problem-solving skills, numerical ability, logical reasoning, and perceptual reasoning.

Selection Criteria
(1)     Demonstration of strong aptitude and interest in Computing
(2)     Evidence of involvement in Computing-related activities
(3)     Ability to cope with the rigour of the A-Level curriculum

Expectations of students selected into the programme
Students admitted through Computing DSA must
(i)      offer H2 Computing;
(ii)     participate and lead in Computing related events at VJC and beyond and
(iii)    provide peer tutoring to selected H2 Computing students.

Science Research

Selection process

  1. Applicant must submit a personal statement (maximum 500 words) detailing his/her involvement in in STEM/research activities with relevant supporting documents. Supporting documents may include:
    - abstracts of research reports
    - photos of exhibits, prototypes
    - certificates related to courses, workshops, or other involvement in the field of STEM/Science research
  2. Shortlisted applicants will attend an interview which includes an oral review of a research article

Selection Criteria
(1)     Demonstration of knowledge, interest and passion in STEM Research
(2)     Clear articulation of motivation and purpose in joining Research@VJC
(3)     Evidence of past experiences relevant to STEM Research
(4)     Ability to cope with the rigour of the A-Level curriculum

Expectations of students selected into the programme
Students admitted through DSA Science Research must
(i)      offer H3 NAV Science Research (this is an examinable A-Level subject);
(ii)     participate in SSEF and
(iii)    be involved in VJC Science and Technology Centre events.
